Researchers have found that the weather has a huge impact on how diners rate a restaurant’s quality of food and service.

According to a study, customers tend to give positive ratings for restaurants during a moderately warm and dry day. On the other hand, if the temperature is either too hot or too cold, restaurants are likely to have negative reviews from their customers.

Saeideh Bakhshi [SAY-yeh-deh  buh k-shee] and Eric Gilbert of Georgia Institute of Technology, in collaboration with Yahoo! Labs research scientist Partha Kanuparthy, conducted the study. They accumulated a decade’s worth of data, amounting to 1.1 million online reviews on 840,000 restaurants in the United States.

The researchers acquired the online reviews from various online databases like GrubHub and AllMenus. These websites are where people post about their dining experience usually after they eat in a restaurant.

Aside from weather conditions, researchers also considered other variables like each restaurant’s demographics, and the economic and education level of its surrounding neighborhood. They discovered the varying differences between large cities and small cities. For one, people in busier cities are more tolerant to wait in lines. On the other hand, people in smaller cities prefer carry-out service to deliveries.

Although these variables provide notable results in the study, the researchers believe that weather conditions are the determinant of every food critic’s opinion.

Previous studies have claimed that weather greatly affects not only the customers, but also the servers. In fact, psychologists have long established that weather circumstances are a dominant factor in influencing a person’s mood and behavior.

In an effort to make online grocery shopping faster and easier, Amazon has released a handheld gadget that lets customers buy items with just one press.

Amazon launched a product called Dash, which customers can use to buy grocery items. By simply scanning the barcode or saying the name of a product, the device automatically includes the product in the customer’s shopping list. With the device, customers can instantly restock, and expect the items to be delivered to their homes the following day.

Shaped like a remote control, Dash is equipped with a barcode scanner and a microphone. Through its built-in Wi-Fi, Dash automatically connects to a laptop or a smartphone. The scanned products are instantly sent to AmazonFresh – a subsidiary of Amazon.com that offers home delivery of grocery items.

For items without barcodes, users can simply use the microphone and say the name of the item. This is convenient when one wants to order products such as fruits and vegetables that are already running low.

Dash can only identify products that are available in the AmazonFresh website. However, users can still try to scan non-AmazonFresh items and the website will provide a list of similar products that it can provide.

Dash is the latest among Amazon’s nifty creations. Since the product is still in its trial period, the company offers it for free. However, the device is currently only available in certain areas in the United States like Southern California, San Francisco, and some parts of Seattle.

Scientists from the U.S. Navy have finally solved the problem of turning seawater into fuel for its ships and planes.

The idea of making alternative fuel out of water has long been boggling researchers. Now, water-powered engines may come to reality through the “liquid hydrocarbon fuel.” This discovery will help the economy from saving funds spent on fuel.

Also, U.S. naval ships are expected to perform better if dependence on oil is gone. Waiting for oil tanker ships slows down and weakens a navy fleet. With the new technology, ships can produce its own fuel without needing a halt to refuel.

U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Philip Cullom [FIL-ip KOL-uh m] cited the urgency to develop innovative ways to create energy. He added that the need for cheap and unlimited amounts of fuel led to the discovery of liquid hydrocarbon fuel.

Researchers from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory produced the fuel by extracting carbon dioxide and hydrogen gas from seawater. These substances were then turned into fuel through a gas-to-liquid process using a catalytic [kat-l-IT-ik] converter.

The estimated cost of this fuel is three to six dollars per gallon. Scientists have successfully tested the fuel in a model airplane. However, the fuel is yet to be tested on actual ships and planes.

Nonetheless, Cullom considers this technology a huge milestone for the navy. He added that the biggest benefit is that this fuel can be used in the same engines that ships and aircrafts currently use. However, the Navy might take at least 10 years to produce  ample amount of liquid hydrocarbon fuel.
