A group of researchers from the University of California San Diego (UCSD) has developed a tool that explains the processes involved in human metabolism. This tool will help people gain an in-depth understanding of the human body. Called Recon 2, the tool will serve as a map in which essential body parts and functions can be explored.
Bernhard Palsson, one of Recon 2’s creators and a bioengineering professor at UCSD, stated that the tool is important in understanding the activities occurring within the human body. Such activities include how our body digests and converts food into energy.
Aside from learning more about the body’s normal functions, people can also use Recon 2 to understand how certain diseases such as cancer and diabetes develop. This interactive tool can also help doctors in effectively explaining specific conditions to their patients.
Experts have compared Recon 2 to Google’s mapping system. According to UCSD officials, the tool includes features that allow the user to zoom the map in and out to show the desired information.

Upgraded from its predecessor Recon 1, Recon 2 is currently considered as the most comprehensive tool about human metabolism to date. The new tool also shows more precise and more specific data about the metabolic processes of the body.
However, Recon 2 will still undergo developments in the future as more scientific facts are needed to be integrated in its program.
