The Brazilian government strengthens security for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
The government formed 10,000 elite forces to prevent violent protests against football matches. Last June, several protesters caused disorder in different cities of Brazil when the country hosted the Confederations Cup. At that time, citizens protested against the government’s corruption and the very high budget allocation for the World Cup.
Another security concern for the government is football-related violence. In a recent Brazilian football league match, a scuffle between fans resulted in a game delay and left four fans injured.
The military, police, firefighters, and logistics experts compose the elite force, known as the shock troop. Colonel [KUR-nl] Alexandre Aragon [alek-SAN-dre a-ra-GON] will lead the 10,000 men, who will be spread in 12 cities and will back up the city police.
The team has finalized the security plan at the end of January. FIFA also made sure that a very comprehensive but more advanced security concept is set for the World Cup.
An estimated 600,000 tourists and about three million out of the 200 million Brazilians are expected to watch the World Cup games. Hence, the government will continue to prepare for any disturbances that could happen in the month-long event that starts on June 12.
Aragon claims that the troop is not an ordinary one since the men are trained to respond in crisis and do specific missions. The elite men will also already have more than two years of training by the start of the World Cup. Thus, Aragon guarantees that these men can act simultaneously in securing the 12 venues.
