Getting a hair transplant continues to gain popularity in Pakistan.

Pakistan is a country where masculinity can be determined by the amount of hair a man has. According to Doctor Humayun Mohmand, derogatory remarks are commonly given to bald men. In 2000, Dr. Mohmand began to offer hair transplant services. This procedure is done by transferring a strip of hair-bearing scalp to the area with hair loss.

Back then, many Pakistanis feared that the surgery will cause diseases in the head and scalp area. But this misconception was proven to be untrue after Pakistan’s current Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif [NA-waz shah-rif] appeared to the public in 2007 with a full head of hair. Sharif was already balding during his last office term in 1999 so he underwent a hair transplant.

Doctor Fawad Aamir [ah-meer] claims that seeing Sharif restore his hair gave Pakistani men the confidence to undergo the same operation. Mohmand recalled that from 2001 to 2006, he conducted only around 1,000 hair transplant operations. But from 2007 to present, he has already treated 8,000 patients.

Pakistan has more than 100 hair transplant clinics in different regions. An operation can cost between $400 and $6,000. Most patients are men but some women also undergo the operation.

The operation can also involve facial hair treatment and beard growth, which is a common Islamic tradition among men. Growing a beard signifies devotion, which is why Muslim men are keen to have thick facial hair.
