An award-winning Italian chef recently presented and served his art-inspired dishes during an exhibit by Sotheby’s [suh-thuh-BEES], an auctioneering company.
Three Michelin-starred chef Massimo Bottura brought his renowned restaurant, Osteria Francescana, to London’s Sotheby’s auction house from June 27 to 28. The restaurant offered Bottura’s dishes inspired by the works of famous artists for ₤250 per head. The restaurant’s design also featured various contemporary artworks, allowing diners to talk about food and art.
For the main course, Bottura served his Damien Hirst [DEY-mee-uh n hurst]-inspired dish called “Beautiful Psychedelic [sahy-ki-DEL-ik] Spin-Painted Veal, not Flame Grilled.” The next course called “Oops! I Dropped the Lemon Tart” was done in honor of Ai Weiwei’s [ahy wey-wey] work called Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn, which was created in 1995. The final course, “Camouflage: Hare in the Wood,” was inspired by Pablo Picasso’s cubist paintings.
The original Osteria Francescana restaurant is located in Modena, a city in Italy that is surrounded by many art studios and galleries. This restaurant has been admired by artists, critics, and collectors long before Bottura bought the place in 1995.
Last March, a number of food establishments and hotels in Hong Kong also incorporated art in their food to celebrate the Art Basel [BAH-zuh l] event. Restaurants such as the Mandarin Grill + Bar, Pierre, Felix, Whisk, M Bar, and Ms B’s Cakery served art-inspired courses to honor the artworks that were exhibited during the event.
Some restaurants not only incorporate famous artworks in their food but also in their interior design. Among these restaurants are Sketch, Scott’s, and Chotto Matte in London.
