To celebrate the launch of a new outlet in its 100th country, Tanzania, Pizza Hut delivered a pizza to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Pizza Hut got listed in the Guinness World Records for conducting the first-ever pizza delivery on a mountain’s summit. This event marks the opening of the first Pizza Hut in the largest city in Tanzania—Dar es Salaam.
The American restaurant chain is known for its extraordinary celebrations of important milestones in the company. In the past years, Pizza Hut delivered some of its products to the White House and the International Space Station. Milind Pant, Pizza Hut International’s president, said that there is no better way to celebrate this new breakthrough than setting a Guinness World Record title for the highest delivery on land at 19,341 feet.
To make this momentous event happen, a pepperoni pizza was created in Pizza Hut Dar es Salaam and transported to the Kilimanjaro International Airport. Originally, the team composed of five professional guides planned to use a helicopter or drone to accomplish the mission. However, because of factors such as thin air, a small landing zone, high altitude, and strong winds, they decided to deliver the pizza by carrying it up the mountain themselves.
The delivery took four days, spanning a total distance of 745 kilometers. Guinness World Records’ representative Pravin Patel went to Tanzania to personally check if all guidelines were followed by the attempt.
Aside from the Guinness World Record title, the mission also helped raise funds for the improvement of the Msasani Primary School in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
