All Oahu /oʊˈɑ hu/ and Kauai /ˈkaʊ aɪ/ Genki Sushi restaurants have temporarily ceased operations to comply with a request from the Hawaii Department of Health (DOH).
In August, the DOH ordered all Genki restaurants in these locations to close down because of a Hepatitis A outbreak that affected more than 250 people. Imported scallops served raw at Genki Sushi restaurants in the island are suspected to have caused the outbreak. These scallops were distributed to the two locations by Koha Oriental Foods. According to a food expert, it is likely that the scallops were harvested from polluted waters, which caused the contamination. The department embargoed all frozen scallop products to prevent further distribution.
The restaurants were shut down for almost a month before being allowed to reopen in early September. To prevent further illnesses, all restaurants disposed their food products and single-use items like cups, napkins, and utensils. The restaurants were also extensively sanitized. In addition, Genki Sushi employees were tested for Hepatitis A. Results showed that none of the employees contracted the illness.
Hepatitis A is a disease that attacks a person’s liver. People can get it through consumption of contaminated food or water, direct contact with an infected person, or poor hygiene. Some symptoms of this disease include fever, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.
The World Health Organization recommends several ways to reduce the risk of developing Hepatitis A. Good food preparation is crucial. A vaccine is also available to combat the disease.
