The city of Glasgow in Scotland is set to host the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships for the first time in history.

The event will be held in Scottish National Arena which will remain under construction until 2013. The arena, which is worth £127 million, can hold 12,500 people including the 525 gymnasts from 80 countries who will participate in the competition. Scotland is expected to earn 5 million pounds during the ten-day event.

Thrilled by this news, Glasgow’s city councilor Gordon Matheson said that winning the bid to host the competition proves his city remains to be one of the world’s top sporting location. Glasgow outbid Orlando and Paris, two cities known for their long history of hosting sporting events.

Glasgow City Council won the bid with the help of UK Sport, Event Scotland and British Gymnastics.

Jane Allen, head of British Gymnastics, claimed that the support from Glasgow citizens will give the team great advantage. The British Gymnastics team needs to win in The World Artistic Gymnastics Championship in order to qualify for the Olympic Games in 2016.
