Survivors of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing participated in this year’s marathon after training with a group called 415 Strong.

The 119th Boston Marathon was held on April 20, 2015. Among the 30,000 participants, 25 were from Team 415 Strong. The 26.2-mile marathon started at Hopkinton [HOP-kin-ton], New England, and ended at Boylston [BOYL-ston] Street, Copley [KOP-lee] Square.

The Boston Marathon bombing, which happened on April 15, 2013, is considered to be one of the most damaging terrorist attacks in the United States. The incident killed three people and left around 260 injured. Many of those injured were spectators of the event.

After this tragedy, 415 Strong was formed by word of mouth. The group’s name was taken from the date when the bombing took place. Its original purpose was to support the victims with physical injuries and those who were traumatized by the incident. But with the help of Dave Fortier, a runner who was injured during the bombing, 415 Strong became a running group. Since then, the members of the group have undergone several training sessions.

Two years after the bombing, many of the survivors still suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a mental condition caused by experiencing or even witnessing frightening and life-threatening events. People with PTSD usually have nightmares or flashbacks about the terrible events they experienced, thus causing anxiety.

Participating in support groups like 415 Strong is one of the ways a person can deal with PTSD. In fact, the members of 415 Strong found comfort in sharing advice and suggesting ways to recover from the incident with each other.
