Eating oily fish can help reduce the risk of having allergic rhinitis [rahy-NAHY-tis], study finds. Allergic rhinitis is a condition wherein the inside of a person’s nose becomes inflamed due to allergens like dust, pollen, mold, and animal skin particles.

The study conducted by the Karolinska [kar-uh-LIN-ska] Institute involved parents and their children. They answered questionnaires on how frequently the children ate some common food and beverages. They also answered questions about the types of oily fish, as well as the less oily ones, that the children consumed. Finally, the parents were asked if their children showed symptoms of nonallergic rhinitis—the type that is not caused by allergens—after the age of four.

Results show that children who eat fish that is rich in oil have a lesser chance of having allergic rhinitis when they get older than those who do not. Out of the 1,590 children who were symptom-free from nonallergic rhinitis at eight years old, only 21% acquired allergic rhinitis later on.

While the researchers did not find a connection between the consumption of fish and the development of nonallergic rhinitis from ages 8 to 16, they concluded that eating oily fish can specifically lessen one’s risk of having allergic rhinitis by around 50%.

Aside from reducing the risks of allergic rhinitis, consuming oily fish has other health benefits. According to an article by Medical News Today, eating oily fish helps prevent cardiovascular diseases. This is because oily fish is rich in Omega-3, a type of fatty acid that combats the negative effects of stress on the heart. Aside from that, eating oily fish can also aid in preventing certain types of cancers.
