A seven-year-old Japanese boy who had been missing for a week has been found alive and unharmed. He was reported missing after his parents left him on a mountain road to discipline him.
After six days of search and rescue operations, Yamato Tanooka was found safe by soldiers in a cabin on a remote military base. Originally, Yamato’s parents claimed that their son got separated from them when they were gathering wild vegetables in the mountains, but they later admitted what really happened.
According to Yamato’s parents, they merely wanted to teach their son a lesson for throwing stones at cars and people while they were on an outing, so they left him on the side of the road. However, Yamato was already gone several minutes later when they went back to get him.
Many social media users expressed their disapproval with the way Yamato’s parents dealt with their son’s misbehavior. A well-known neurologist and author tweeted that the parents’ action was not discipline, but child abuse. In addition, another social media user tweeted that the parents should have hidden nearby to keep an eye on him, instead of leaving him.
Yamato told the police that he got lost when he tried to chase his parents’ car right after he was left alone. He said that he did not find anything to eat, so he drank water from a stream to survive.
In an interview, Yamato’s father expressed both his gratitude and regret. He said that he would take better care of his son and spend more time with him. On the other hand, the police said that they do not intend to file a case against the parents.
