The famous anime series Detective Conan, also known as Meitantei Conan, celebrated its 20th year on air with the release of its 20th film.

Last January, the popular anime, first televised in 1996, turned twenty. Earlier in the same month, the Japanese entertainment company Toho released a teaser video for the anime’s newest film installment, which will premiere in April.

The anime is based on a Japanese comic of the same name by Gosho Aoyama. Its story revolves around the adventures of a high school detective turned into a grade school boy by a criminal group called the Black Organization by drugging him with a mysterious pill. To protect his life and the people around him, the protagonist changed his name from Shinichi Kudo to Conan Edogawa. The anime highlights Conan’s feats in solving difficult crimes, especially murder cases, with the main goal of hunting down the Black Organization.

The 20th film titled The Darkest Nightmare will focus on Conan’s long-awaited encounter with the group responsible for changing his body. Previously released artwork by Aoyama shows familiar characters from previous films and TV episodes. Aoyama also mentioned that the new movie’s plot will be very dark, making Japanese fans express their excitement on the Internet.

Both Michihiko Suwa, the anime’s TV producer, and Minami Takayama, the artist providing Conan’s voice, agreed that the young detective’s stories remain relevant two decades after it was first released. Takayama said that everyone, from grandparents to their grandchildren, can enjoy it on TV and in the theater.
