A restaurant in Charlotte, North Carolina called Pure Pizza takes a stand against gender discrimination by introducing a unisex bathroom in their store.

Along with the construction of the bathroom, the owner, Juli Metcalf Ghazi, had a note posted inside it explaining her reasons for the decision. According to the note, the establishment had the unisex bathroom constructed to avoid causing customers discomfort by forcing them to use gender-specific toilets. The note also mentioned that the establishment wanted to provide a family bathroom that can be used by single dads with daughters, single moms with sons, parents of children with disabilities, members of the LGBT community, or adults with elderly parents who may have disabilities.

The owner was spurred to take action partly because of the Charlotte City Council's decision to discard LGBT-inclusive nondiscrimination legislation in the past. The ordinances would have included sexual orientation and gender identity as protected categories in existing laws.

A photo of the note was taken by a customer and uploaded on social media where it went viral, having been shared more than 1000 times and ‘liked’ by more than 2,800 people. Numerous people praised the owner online and in person for her attempt to make a difference.
